I am listening to Steely Dan’s Katy Lied for the first time and also realizing for the first time that the title is “Katy Lied” as in “Katy Told a Lie”, not as in “Katy Song” (Lied = song, in German).

T— attended a John Cage lecture/performance in Minnesota in the 1970’s. Cage delivered one of his chance texts (something from M?) then took questions. A man stood and introduced himself as a music professor at a local college. He said he wanted to expose his students to contemporary music but was reluctant because he didn't know what contemporary music was good. Cage’s advice: “Listen to one hundred hours of contemporary music. Then you will know.”
